Becoming a part of the pharmacy technician career is a fulfilling accomplishment. You will have the opportunity to work with a licensed pharmacist who will teach you everything you need to know. Jobs are available in pharmacies, department stores and grocery chains.
Let’s take a look at some of the things a pharmacy technician can do. Their actual jobs vary according to their workplace. However, their basic job is to take care of the medication and health care needs of patients under the watchful eye of a licensed pharmacist.
You can help the pharmacist fill prescriptions that doctors have ordered. This may include labeling bottles, counting pills or mixing medicine. You might also do things such as attend the cash register, answer the phone or stock shelves.
Job responsibilities differ somewhat from those above if you work in mail order or retail pharmacies. You would receive the refills or prescriptions that doctors prescribe directly from the patient or from the doctor’s office by electronic means.
In the retail or mail order world, their first responsibility is to read the prescription, verify it and make sure it is accurate and complete. They help in the preparation by doing whatever is necessary to fill the prescription. This could include, counting, weighing, measuring or mixing a medication. Once it is prepared, it must be labeled, priced and filed, in order to be ready for the patient. They can, also, work with insurance claim forms and inventory.
Pharmacy technicians always work in a nice type of environment. They spend most of the day on their feet, doing whatever is necessary to help the pharmacist. It may be necessary for them to climb ladders to get things off of a high shelf, or they may have to lift heavy boxes.
Pharmacy technicians work at different times depending on the establishment they are working for. It may include nights, evenings, holidays and weekends, especially in places that are open 24 hours a day. As they work longer in a facility, they may be able to control the hours they work to a greater extent. Opportunities for part time work abound in hospitals or retail areas.
You don’t have to have any formal training to be a pharmacy technician. You will be trained at your workplace by a licensed pharmacist. Some states or workplaces require you to become certified. If that is necessary, you will need to take a 10 week course to help you prepare for certification.
If you are good in mathematics, can follow orders exactly and love to work with people, becoming a pharmacy technician may be something you would enjoy. Salaries range between $10 and $17 during the first 10 years. You won’t lack for a job in this career.
